About Madeira Airport Weather

Many tourists from across the globe travel each year to Madeira, an autonomous archipelago and region of Portugal. Some of the wide-ranging reasons that they come here include first-rate restaurants and bars, boutiques selling a good mix of unique items, interesting cultural and historical buildings and other attractions, and simply the chance to unwind on one of the beaches.

One common aspect of all these explanations for visiting Madeira is the fantastic weather that the region usually enjoys, with many days of bright sunshine, minimal rain and decent humidity. This pleasant climate also means that the area is one that is great for a holiday no matter the time of year.

But every person’s vacation plans and aims are unique to them, and some people might prefer to visit the area when there are fewer crowds, which typically happens in the winter months. Others may want to spend their holiday here when the temperatures are at their peak during the busy summer months. Keep reading to learn all that you need to know about the weather in Madeira during a typical year.

Facts about Madeira’s average weather

Here is what you can expect for the average highs and lows of key weather metrics in Madeira:

  • Temperature: Coldest in January at 10°C (50°F), hottest in August at 23°C (73.4°F)
  • Humidity: Expect this to be higher in the valleys and northern Madeira
  • Rainfall: Most in January at 112 millimeters, least in July at 9 millimeters
  • Sea: Peaks under 25°C (77°F) in August, lowest is under 20°C (68°F) in January
  • Sunshine: Only 3 hours per day in December, up to 11 hours a day in June

What to expect from Madeira’s weather year-round

Madeira has an impressive landscape that includes a mountainous range in the center that tends to keep the colder, windier weather to the north, leaving the south as a warmer, sunnier place. This also explains why the northern part of Madeira also has colder temperatures and more rain.

The mountain range itself has a unique “micro-climate” with its own highs and lows when it comes to rainfall, temperature and other factors, which you can experience if you go hiking along this range.

Below you can find a brief summary of what to expect from the weather in Madeira throughout a standard year. Just remember that the best time of year to visit is the one that matches most closely with what you want to do on your vacation – there is no right or wrong season to come to Madera, as is welcoming to tourists no matter the month. And be sure to pack appropriate clothing, such as coats and potentially an umbrella that fits in your suitcase if you are coming in rainier, colder months.

Winter (December to February): You will likely experience some fairly cold days and nights if you come to Madeira during this season, with temperatures that can get as low as 10°C (50°F), although that is rare, and it’s more likely to be in the 13°C (55.4°F) to 18C (64.4°F) range during the day. It’s far from the best season for doing anything outside, but at least the island will not be too crowded. There will also likely be a fair amount of rain, so be sure to consider coming with a coat and umbrella.

Spring (March to May): Many tourists report that they find the spring months to be the perfect balance of warm weather and sunshine with just the right amount of a pleasant breeze and cooler evenings than the summer. Because the island can be somewhat chillier at night in the spring compared to the summer, you may find that everywhere is less busy if you visit during this time, so you should pack lighter clothes for being outside during the day and thicker clothes for the nights.

Summer (June to August): This is the ideal season to visit if you are looking for lots of sunny days, with temperatures usually averaging 25°C (77°F). There is very little rain during these months as well, as low as 5 millimeters a month. But the only downside to this excellent weather is that it attracts many people, so you can expect Madeira to be much more crowded during the summer months. You will not likely have any reason for a jacket or other similar extra layers, due to the often high temperatures.

Autumn/Fall (September to November): During this season, the weather slowly starts to get colder in advance of the winter. Average temperatures in the daytime should be around 20°C (68°F) or slightly higher, so you should still be able to do some outside activities such as hiking, water-sports and more comfortably during the day. At night, it can get quite chilly, so be sure to pack extra layers. And typical rain levels will increase the further along that the season gets to winter.

Tips on how to choose what time of year to visit Madeira

Use the above information to help inform your eventual decision on the time of year that you would like to visit Madeira, but be sure to find a month that works with your specific travel plans.

For example, if your main priority with your holiday is relaxing and tanning on the beach, enjoying outside dining and similar activities, you may want to consider visiting during the spring or summer months when the weather will be warmer and sunnier, with less chance of rain to disrupt your plans.

But if you are instead coming to Madeira with the intent on spending a lot of time indoors – such as visiting many museums, or coming mostly for indoor dining and shopping – then the weather outside should have less of an impact on your itinerary. If that’s the case, you could consider coming during the colder months in winter, when there will be fewer crowds and hotel rooms might also be cheaper.
